Our campaign on the Square Enix Collective is now live!

Vote now for Ethereal Legends, for us to have the opportunity to collaborate with Square Enix and make this game the best it can possibly be.

We’re on the Square Enix Collective in search of the right audience and a source of funding to make our vision of Ethereal Legends into a reality. We believe that with your help, we can make an extremely fun, satisfying, and beautiful experience that you’ll want to come back to time and time again.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Square Enix Collective, it’s  a curated platform that enables creators to post ideas, and gamers to judge whether those ideas should become reality or not. If an idea is supported by the community, SE may offer to support the project through crowdfunding and/or publishing. It’s an incredible deal for indie developers like us, who are in the early stages of building their games and communities, with the opportunity for some really big assitance from a major publisher.

Any money received through this campaign would go directly into the game, making it far better than we could hope to achieve without your support. You’ll see the game get new, high quality art and animation, professional voice acting, better music from seasoned composers, and a whole slew of new features to add to the fun; all on top of a professional level of quality assurance that few indies can provide.

We’ve run with the Collective before, in our campaign for Endless Reach last year. It was a great experience, though ultimately unsuccessful. We learned a lot from that process, and we feel we’ve returned to the Collective much stronger, with a more capable team and a project that is squarely aimed (pun intended?) at the audience we’re trying to speak to. With Ethereal Legends, we believe we’ve created a game with interesting ideas and quality gameplay. And while we’re good at what we do, there are a million different ways for us to make the game better than it is. To do that, however, we need your help.

Vote for us on the Square Enix Collective, and with luck, you’ll see this game become larger than the sum of it’s parts!

A Wild Launcher Appears!

After Ethereal was posted to Oculus Share, we began to have issues with our Dropbox account bandwidth, in that they were turning off our public downloads pretty quick. We weren’t prepared to pay out the monthly fee to raise our bandwidth limit, so we had to quickly find an alternative solution.

For a long time I’ve wanted to have a launcher for my games… kind of like a lot of the big AAA guys. It simply made a LOT of sense to me for players to have a way to install and download the game in an extremely clean and efficient manner. No one wants to download a 2+ GB file in their browser, and they definitely don’t want to do it every time they require an update. Sure, Steam will do all of this for us once we release on the platform… but what do we do until then?

Luckily, an awesome guy by the name of Jarl Gullberg has built and open-sourced a project he calls Launchpad that supplies this exact functionality. We set up a dedicated Azure cloud FTP server that holds our game, and Launchpad allows us to download and install the game and any future updates (both to the game and the launcher itself) directly from the launcher. A great feature is that it will also check and verify your installation, as well as resume file downloading if it gets interrupted. Jarl gets huge props from us for open-sourcing this project! What probably would have taken me three or four weeks to build on my own, we were able to get up and running in a day with Launchpad. It made a huge difference.

Now when you download Ethereal Legends, you’ll receive a 26 MB installer for the launcher. You’ll need to install and then run the launcher as an administrator in order for it to open. After that, it should be pretty self-explanatory to use.

We’ll post more really soon!
